Eavy Metal Masterclass: How to Paint a Space Marine Librarian
If you are a fan of Warhammer 40,000 and want to learn how to paint a Space Marine Librarian with the Eavy Metal style, this article is for you. Eavy Metal is the name of the team of professional painters who work for Games Workshop, the company that produces Warhammer 40,000. They are known for their high-quality and detailed paint jobs that showcase the models in the best possible way.
In this article, we will show you how to paint a Space Marine Librarian using the same techniques and colours that Eavy Metal uses. A Space Marine Librarian is a powerful psyker who can unleash devastating psychic powers on the enemies of the Imperium. They wear blue armour to signify their status and often carry a force weapon and a psychic hood.
To paint a Space Marine Librarian, you will need the following materials:
A Space Marine Librarian model. You can use any model that represents a Librarian, but we will use the one from the Dark Vengeance starter set as an example.
A set of Citadel paints and brushes. You can find the full list of paints and brushes that Eavy Metal uses on their website[^1^], but we will also mention them in each step.
A pot of water and some paper towels to clean your brushes.
A palette or a piece of cardboard to mix your paints.
A spray can of Chaos Black to undercoat your model.
A PDF file of the Eavy Metal Masterclass article on painting Sergeant Lorenzo[^2^], a Blood Angels Terminator from Space Hulk. This article contains some useful tips and tricks on painting red armour, which we will apply to our Librarian's cloak and hood.
Before you start painting, make sure you assemble and clean your model properly. Remove any mould lines or excess plastic with a hobby knife or a file. Then spray your model with Chaos Black from a distance of about 30 cm (12 inches), covering it evenly with a thin layer of paint. Let it dry completely before proceeding to the next step.Step 1: Basecoat the armour
The first step is to apply a basecoat of Macragge Blue to the armour of the Librarian. This is a dark blue colour that will provide a good foundation for the later highlights. Use a large brush, such as a Base brush, and thin your paint with a little water to improve its flow. Apply two or three thin coats of Macragge Blue, leaving the recesses and the edges black. Don't worry about being too neat at this stage, as you will tidy up any mistakes later.
Step 2: Shade the armour
The next step is to shade the armour with Nuln Oil, a black wash that will create depth and contrast. Use a medium brush, such as a Shade brush, and apply Nuln Oil generously over the blue areas, letting it pool in the recesses and the corners. Be careful not to let it stain the black areas, as you want to keep them clean and sharp. Let the wash dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Highlight the armour
The final step for the armour is to highlight it with lighter shades of blue. This will create a smooth gradient and make the armour look shiny and metallic. Use a small brush, such as a Layer brush, and thin your paint with water to create a smooth consistency. Start with Calgar Blue, a medium blue colour, and apply it to the edges and the raised areas of the armour. Leave some Macragge Blue visible in the middle of each panel to create a transition. Next, use Fenrisian Grey, a light blue-grey colour, and apply it to the most prominent edges and corners of the armour. This will create a sharp contrast and make the armour look more defined. Finally, use White Scar, a pure white colour, and apply it sparingly to the very tips and points of the armour. This will create a bright reflection and make the armour look shiny. aa16f39245
